Is the gold a more dense metal? Or is is simply an optical illusion and the thickness is actually greater on the gold coin?
It is not an optical illusion. Gold is the denser metal, as you correctly suspect. Therefore, when comparing coins of the same weight of gold and silver, the gold coin will be the smaller in size.
Besides, gold coins are just fascinating to collect!

The 1986 AGE $10 quarter oz is being sold for around $190 each, with gold at $657 per oz. Price is for raw AGE coin; slabbed and graded AGEs command higher premiums among collectors.
I recently found an ad in a finanaical magazine advertising the 2006 Gem BU (MS65) NGC-cert Silver American Eagle for $10 each (without NGC casing) and similar Gold Eagle (1/10 oz) selling for $63 each. Even the spots for silver and gold are more than those prices - too good to be true? What do you think?
Since the ad was in a magazine, the time the ad was submitted is at least 1-2 months ago. At that time gold and silver were trading lower than they are today, so those prices were probably above spot at that time. Maybe there's some small print in the ad to cover themselves for changes in spot price.
1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz, & 4 coin set.
ebay tracks the gold price pretty closely, you'll never get less than the scrap price for a coin (but you should get more)
1oz is currently going for about 1100USDs - about 700GBPs

US Mint Weekly Sales: 2009 Bullion Gold Eagles Take Lead - Coin News
If the United States Mint was hoping for strong Christmas week sales from Santa, unfortunately, they were disappointed. For the third straight week figures show significant drops in volume almost across the board for collector coins.
Only a few meager entries managed a positive change, but the overall results are not too rosy. Of course, this time of year one would expect a lack of interest in the hobby with thoughts turning to travel and family and friends. Even those individuals who thought ahead to give coins as gifts had to plan that out weeks ago and place their orders to insure delivery before Christmas.
