Is the gold a more dense metal? Or is is simply an optical illusion and the thickness is actually greater on the gold coin?
It is not an optical illusion. Gold is the denser metal, as you correctly suspect. Therefore, when comparing coins of the same weight of gold and silver, the gold coin will be the smaller in size.
Besides, gold coins are just fascinating to collect!
Some of my 1/10 oz gold coins. Canadian Maple, South African Kruggerand, American Eagle, Chinese Panda. A good way to start investing in gold. Enjoy
1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz, & 4 coin set.
ebay tracks the gold price pretty closely, you'll never get less than the scrap price for a coin (but you should get more)
1oz is currently going for about 1100USDs - about 700GBPs
any one recommending reputable gold coin dealers? I 'm wanting to buy some 1 oz gold american eagles or canadian maple leafs?
If you happen to find one, please let everyone on here know.
Canadian Maple leaf or American Eagle 1 oz gold coins, are they 24 carrat sold gold? Which is better as an investment? And I noticed 9999 on some gold coins, what does that mean? thanks
No coin is 24 kt for it would be very soft and would damage easily. The American eagle gold coins are .9167 fine gold with .03 silver and .0533 copper. The Canadian gold maple leaf if .9999 fine and .0001 copper. The gold American Buffalo bullion coin is also .9999 fine. The price differences between the coins has to do with added collector value as well as availability. If one is going to invest in gold the cheapest way is to buy gold bars. Most gold bullion coins are way over priced if one just wants gold, for there are to many middlemen. You need to study the market more before jumping in. I do not give investment advice. I gave you the facts so it is your choice.
It is a 1977 american gold eagle.
It is solid gold coin worth $1.00
It is at least 1 1/2 oz.
Eagles are 1 oz so I'm guessing that you are guessing .
1977 probably would not really have collector value but if it is the 1 oz eagle ,
Today it would get at least $715 . . .

Gold Climbs as Dollar Falls, Silver Advances - Coin News
New York gold futures on Wednesday advanced for the third time in four days as the US dollar was pressured lower on expectations that the Fed would hold interest rates low for some time. The yellow metal on Tuesday had dropped the most in three weeks on profit taking and news of China clamping down on its monetary policy.
In other metals, silver gained 1.6 percent but platinum finished down 0.3 percent. Platinum was not the only commodity to fall. New York crude oil prices dropped for a third straight day and below $80 a barrel after a government report showed higher than expected inventories. US stocks rallied late, with the Nasdaq rising the most at 1.12 percent.
