2008 American Eagle Silver Dollar

Answers

Which is a better coin for collecting?

Which would you rather have? This is a gift for my mother who loves coin collecting.

A 2008 bald eagle silver dollar proof: Only ~$44, but only 500,000 are to be produced

A 2008 American buffalo proof coin: ~$160 but no statement of limiting the production

Both are official U.S. coins from the U.S. mint.

The 2008 bald eagle coin is a commemorative coin while the 2008 American Buffalo coin is a gold bullion coin and for $160 it must be the 1/10 of an ounce. You may find that the gold buffalo will have the lowest mintage. Looking at the American gold eagle proof issues of 1/10 oz. only 17,546 2005 proofs were made and 15,636 2004 proofs were made. The most proofs made from what books I have is 143,681 from the first year 1988. Not all mintage figures for 2006-2007 have been released yet. I am a numismatist and collect the old historic coins, so would have to take the Bald Eagle for it's historic value but the gold coin would be the best investment.

I personally would want the Gold Buffalo simply because I have numerous Silver Eagles already... BUT if your mother is a small time collector or beginner, she will be more than happy with the Silver Eagle $1.

Why not get her the Silver Eagle now and start saving for the Gold Buffalo for a gift NEXT year ! It's a win win situation for both of you. If you are financially stable and money is NOT the object then get one now and the next for her at the next gift giving holiday of your choice.

Either way she will love what you give her... I know I enjoy ANYTHING my son gives me, even if it is a coin I already have. I gladly accept duplicates of any part of my collection. : )

Be sure to include a hug !!

I am looking for advice when purchasing a Platinum American Eagle coin...?

First off i started collecting 6 months ago and have acquired coins from a Morgan to Seated liberty half to silver eagle, presidential dollar, commemoratives, etc. I purchased my first gold coin a 2008 $5 buffalo graded by ANACS in SP 70(satin) Now i am looking to purchase a $10 platinum eagle and have narrowed it down to a 2008 NGC coin. I am aware that these coins come in MS 69/ MS 70 with a regular label or the E.R. I like the idea of early release but would like to have a MS 70 grade. Looking at PCGS price grade a 1997 $10 in MS 70 is listed at $7,000. The value of a 1997 $10 in MS 69 is $145 so this brings me to believe that i am much better off purchasing a 70 grade. (tho they did not offer E.R. in 1997) I am looking at this from a collectors viewpoint and would like to say that i own a $7,000 coin (i am aware this may not appreciate in all cases) would paying $300 dollars for a regular 2008 MS 70 be overpaying by too much, this seems to suit my price range as i know platinum is around a G/ounce. i am trying to decide between the regular label MS 70 or an E.R. 69 please share anything advice/comment you may have. 21/male. thank you

MS 70 is the highest grade possible it is the closest to being perfect as your going to get, it is also the most expensive if a MS-69 cost $100 then an MS-70 will at minimum be double the price. There is also the grade of Deep Cameo MS-70 this coin will let you see yourself as if looking in a mirror this is the most Expensive grade I know of. Good luck
