2008 American Silver Eagle

Answers

Why are the 2008 American Eagle Silver Proof coins selling for more than the older ones?

low supply/high demand ...they're hard to find these days.
and the 1oz. gold coins...forget about it. If you can find any they will cost well over $900 and could take a couple of months for delivery.

2008 silver eagle mintage?

does anyone know the mintage rate of the 2008 american silver eagle

huh?

1 Troy Oz. fine silver American Silver Eagle worth?

I have a coin that says "1 troy oz. .999 fine American Silver Eagle" The mint is JW, whatever that is, and the year is 2008. How much would it be worth (Mint Condition).
JM, not JW. Sorry!

Run of the mill Uncirculated 2008 American Silver Eagle coins seem to be selling for around $22.50 to $25.00, *shipping included*, on eBay.

Note that today's silver price is about $17 per Troy ounce. The value of this coin may change: either when the price of silver fluctuates, or when collector demand rises or falls for this year's Silver Eagles.

Here's a completed listings search that shows the actual prices realized from completed auctions of these coins (requires an eBay account to view the results of the search):

Some coins in that search have sold for higher prices, from around $30 to perhaps $120. Most of those have been "slabbed" in plastic holders and certified as being very high grades by coin grading and certification companies.

Some of the higher priced coins are also identified as "first strikes", although apparently there is some controversy over that designation:

Also, Proof coins (sharper strikes on mirrored surface coin blanks) - as distinguished from Uncirculated coins - are likely to realize higher prices, as is the case with all Silver Eagles. Proof coins are usually found in special cases indicating their Proof status.

Finally, a few coins have an error - they were struck at the mint with the wrong die, using the "reverse of 2007" - and are currently selling, in some cases, in excess of $500. (Note that, after the initial excitement subsides and/or a better estimate of their mintages becomes available, it's possible that these might later sell for less, but that's just conjecture on my part.)

Here's how to identify those coins:

I am looking for advice when purchasing a Platinum American Eagle coin...?

First off i started collecting 6 months ago and have acquired coins from a Morgan to Seated liberty half to silver eagle, presidential dollar, commemoratives, etc. I purchased my first gold coin a 2008 $5 buffalo graded by ANACS in SP 70(satin) Now i am looking to purchase a $10 platinum eagle and have narrowed it down to a 2008 NGC coin. I am aware that these coins come in MS 69/ MS 70 with a regular label or the E.R. I like the idea of early release but would like to have a MS 70 grade. Looking at PCGS price grade a 1997 $10 in MS 70 is listed at $7,000. The value of a 1997 $10 in MS 69 is $145 so this brings me to believe that i am much better off purchasing a 70 grade. (tho they did not offer E.R. in 1997) I am looking at this from a collectors viewpoint and would like to say that i own a $7,000 coin (i am aware this may not appreciate in all cases) would paying $300 dollars for a regular 2008 MS 70 be overpaying by too much, this seems to suit my price range as i know platinum is around a G/ounce. i am trying to decide between the regular label MS 70 or an E.R. 69 please share anything advice/comment you may have. 21/male. thank you

MS 70 is the highest grade possible it is the closest to being perfect as your going to get, it is also the most expensive if a MS-69 cost $100 then an MS-70 will at minimum be double the price. There is also the grade of Deep Cameo MS-70 this coin will let you see yourself as if looking in a mirror this is the most Expensive grade I know of. Good luck

Which is a better coin for collecting?

Which would you rather have? This is a gift for my mother who loves coin collecting.

A 2008 bald eagle silver dollar proof: Only ~$44, but only 500,000 are to be produced

A 2008 American buffalo proof coin: ~$160 but no statement of limiting the production

Both are official U.S. coins from the U.S. mint.

The 2008 bald eagle coin is a commemorative coin while the 2008 American Buffalo coin is a gold bullion coin and for $160 it must be the 1/10 of an ounce. You may find that the gold buffalo will have the lowest mintage. Looking at the American gold eagle proof issues of 1/10 oz. only 17,546 2005 proofs were made and 15,636 2004 proofs were made. The most proofs made from what books I have is 143,681 from the first year 1988. Not all mintage figures for 2006-2007 have been released yet. I am a numismatist and collect the old historic coins, so would have to take the Bald Eagle for it's historic value but the gold coin would be the best investment.

2009 American Silver Eagle Coins Set Annual Record at 28.7 Million ...

Anyone who reads the paper or pays attention to the news on the television or the radio can tell you that precious metal demand was extremely high in 2009. Owing to this almost insatiable appetite for silver, the United States Mint revealed record sales of its American Eagle Silver Bullion coins for the year.

The final 2009 tally from the US Mint places the one ounce silver bullion at 28,766,500 , a leap of over 9 million coins above the previous annual record created just the year before -- 2008 saw 19,583,500 of the Silver Eagles sold, which in itself was amazing. Previous to those two years, sales of the Eagles only broke the 10 million mark twice (in 2002 and 2006) since their introduction.
