Why does a 1 oz silver American eagle coin appear larger than a 1 oz gold American eagle?
old skool quarter

Is the gold a more dense metal? Or is is simply an optical illusion and the thickness is actually greater on the gold coin?

It is not an optical illusion. Gold is the denser metal, as you correctly suspect. Therefore, when comparing coins of the same weight of gold and silver, the gold coin will be the smaller in size.

Besides, gold coins are just fascinating to collect!

Are silver american eagle coins good as an investment?

I'm not talking about investing hundreds of dollars on them. What I am saying is, you hear a lot of people saying a $1 today isn't going to be worth as much later right? Well if I were to purchase a Silver American Eagle coin this year, would the $40 or so dollars spent on it be better served that way or just being saved at home.

Not really.

Coin collecting is more like baseball cards - occasionally you'll get something in your collection with several times the face value. Usually you strive for coins that are rare but not necessarily valuable.

An example would be an Indian head penny from the 1800's. It's not something you'll find every day but it's not worth much more than it's face value. Even though it's at least 100 years old there were still plenty minted and enough out there that the value has increased so little.

You would get a better return rate by investing $100 in a certificate of deposit at an FDIC insured financial institution. In 3 to 6 months you could almost double it depending on where you lived and who your account was with. Then reinvest it again for a longer time and higher interest rate. Keep going.

Coin-wise what's hot right now are the presidential dollar coins. There has been talk of doing away with the Sacagawea and Susan B. Anthony coins in addition to minting comemorative coins on all the presidents.

2007 American Eagle Silver Coin?

Should I buy the uncirculated version from the mint, the uncirculated version from somewhere else, or the proof version from the mint or somewhere else. Also, which (meaning proof or uncirculated) will most likely be worth more in 20 years?

It used to be uncirculated silver eagles had to be bought from a dealer for the mint did not sell the uncirculated variety. This year they are, but it is different for it has the W mint mark on it and I believe it has a different finish. The one from the mint is different.. This is the first year I think, so no one knows how they will sell or how many they will make. Now proofs are made for collectors and are a special made coin with mirror finish and frosted designs. They are struck more than once and are on a special planchet. That is why they are more money. They are also made on slower moving presses. I would go with the proof for sure but if I had a few extra dollars I would also get the uncirculated version from the mint. As an example they minted 7,408,640,1999 uncirculated eagles but minted only 549,769, proofs. they are far few proofs around.

What is the best way to store American Eagle silver coins?

There are many ways and it depends on where you live and keep them. Also the amount of money you want to pay for supplies. A rather new item is the self sealing air tight cardboard 2X2's that are archival. They seem to work quite well and are not that expensive. hard plastic holders are usually not air tight but would take more handling. Also the coins need to be stored in a place that the temperature remains closely the same. If you have high humidity the silica gel needs to be used in the storage box, safe or drawer. Go to www.brooklyngallery.com they are a large dealer in coin and stamp supplies and have almost everything. Look to see what best fits your wallet and what you like. I use more than one system for many reasons as do most collectors.
