Hi Belinda, here's some info about the 50c round coin (and pic of one for those who don't remember the round coin!)....and current value today would depend on year of issue, etc - check out this website for details....http://www.peterstrich.com.au/oz_coins/f ifty_cents/fifty_cents.htm
I've seen some on EBAY for sale at a "buy it now price" of $9.95 and one winning bid paid $14.95.
We happened to find this while dining out and wondering if its worth anything.. I did a little research, its been tough narrowing it down.. Please dont tell me its worth only .50 cents... I saw a coin like it going for $50.00 on a coin collectors site.
From 1969 to date all Australian 50 cent pieces are 12 sided. With a mintage of 24,886,000 it is far from scarce. The book value is .40 in grade very fine, .50 in grade extra fine and $2 in uncirculated. there is also a proof version valued at $7.75. In reality if the coin is circulated it can be found here in the USA for around .25 cents in a coin dealers world coin box. I have no idea what you saw for $50 but it sure was not this coin.
Wich other Australian coins is valuble
The 1966 50 Cent piece is made of silver, and has about .36 Troy ounces of that precious metal, worth perhaps US $4.50 today. The other coins, if in average circulated condition, are essentially just worth their face value, if used in Australia.
The 1977 and 1988 coins are both commemorative coins, minted in copper-nickel, but are fairly common. The 1988 had a modestly low mintage of 2-3 million, and might have some modest value - it has a retail catalog value of about US $2 - if in unused, as minted condition.
You can find values for coins of the world, including Australia, by using online or paper guides. To learn more about these, try this YA answer:

Australian 50 Cent Coins : 2010 Australia Day 50c
Celebrating Australia Day in 2010 the Royal Australian Mint in collaboration with the Australia Day Council has released a commemorative cupro-nickel 50c coin into circulation. With a minimum of 5 million coins planned to enter circulation, expect to find one of these in your change at the shops any day now.
It wasn't until as recently as 1994 that the whole of Australia has consistently celebrated Australia Day on the 26th of January as a public holiday. It was on the 26th January 1788 that The First Fleet from England landed at Sydney Cove and raised the Union Jack founding the Colony of New South Wales. Whilst not always called Australia Day, the 26th of January has historically been used for celebrations and commemorations. It has been known as Foundation Day, Anniversary Day and also Invasion Day.
