Canadian Coin Designs

the Royal Canadian Mint is making way too many coins. Most of them don't even have pictures to do with Canada on them like 1 has a picture a of Santa Clause on it, another is shaped like a playing Card, there are about 40 different olympics quarters, Hockey team symbols, about 50 different olympic dollar coins, a 20dollar coin with a picture of sharks on it, most of them are not even being circulated and have to be purchased off the Mint. My point is they are making way too many and making it imposable for a Collect to get them all, especially since they are not all being circulated. any thoughts on the subject?

It is frustrating for the long-time collector, but the long-time collector is not who they're going after. They are hoping to attract new collectors, and offering a huge variety of choices opens it up to a wider audience. The RCM ( and the US Mint, who is doing the same thing on a much smaller scale) isn't worried about future value as much as they are selling what they have today.

It's completely a business decision, and it's perfectly understandable. Think about it. These mints are government entities. Do they make money from the coins they produce to be used as money? Absolutely not, they lose money. They sell what they produce to banks at face value; production and distribution costs eat that up and then some. But what they produce for the collector market (and don't forget the sizable investor sub-market) is sold for substantial premiums. Wouldn't you, if you were in the business of making coins?

The coin is all in one peice. The condition is "good". It's a deep, bronzy color. The intricate design is very visible. It almost appears to have a soft silvery sheen when you twist it in the light. It says "VICTORIA DEI GRATIA REGINA". Any helpful information about this particular coin and it's value?

It sounds like your coin actually grades above grade good which by the way is a low grade. With your description it may be in extra fine grade, that being the case it would trend for around $8 and if almost uncirculated grade around $20. It had a rather high mintage for the 1890's cents and only the 1899 had a mintage higher. The above prices are trends that means they are an average of what the coin sells for, Dealers pay less and as with Canadian coins in the U.S. you need to find the right dealer to sell it too. U.S. dealers who do not deal in Canadian coins will pay a lot less or not want it. Canadian large cents started after the U.S. stopped making there's. They can be divided up by who reigned in Great Britain at the time. You of course have Queen Victoria who had a long reign and was a person I admired. She was a gutsy Lady. With U.S. coins going out of sight in price a collection of Canadian large cents can be put together without bankrupting a collector, that is as long as you don't go for some of the rare varieties of 1859 or 1891. The worst hurdle is the 1858 which trends for $70 in grade very good but can be bought cheaper than the trends price. Most of the rest are $10 and below, most way below. With your discription the coins sounds like it is in nice shape and is a keeper. The value only has one place to go and that is up.

For my Canadian history class I have to design a two sided coin or bill for Canada based on my understanding/appreciation/feelings/thoughts about the country. I have given it some thought but I really can't decide where to start. Any suggestions are appreciated, thanks:)

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation held a national contest to vote for the "Greatest Canadian Ever." By overwhelming vote it was agreed that Tommy Douglas was the greatest Canadian ever. Tommy Douglas was the founder of the Canadian national universal health care system. They voted him above their founding father, above the writers of their constitution, above Brian Mulrooney or Wayne Gretzkey. This is tribute to how misaligned the Canadian health care system is by the U.S. right wing and how wonderful, appreciated and significantly historically important it is to Canadian citizens.

The timing of this as your project idea couldn't be better. Have Tommy Douglas on one side and something health care related on the other, maybe drawn into the map of Canada. Good luck. I feel an A coming on.

1. Simple test: If it passes the size (diameter and thickness) does it pass the weight?
2. You can do image analysis...
3. Spectral analysis (a bit destructive)

I don't live in Canada. I just happened to find a Canadian quarter on the ground. I saw the red and black poppy flower and didn't initially know what it was. I thought it was something someone had drawn, so I took a cotton swab and rubbing alcohol and tried to rub it off. I then did some research and realized that the design was not something someone had drawn, but in fact part of the coin. It's still there, but it's faded due to my scrubbing. Does this mean it will still be accepted as money or did I completely deface it along with its value?

Nope.. its still worth 25 cents.. some of them have their color scratched off anyways...
we also have quarters with a pink ribbon on them for breast cancer.. and new Olympic quarters that have a red maple leaf in the background.. they're pretty sweet, I love our money! haha :)
