What is my 1993 Canadian miss strike dime worth?
the family fortune

I have found a 1993 Canadian dime that seems to be a miss strike. The coin has no rim denticles as other dimes do, and is smaller and weighs less than a regular 1993 dime. I can't find anything about it so anyone know what I've got?

I can not find anything on this coin either, so it must be some one using some kind of a machine made the coin smaller. Canada does not have or use any planchets that are just smaller than a dime. If you live in Canada you can call the mint they are glad to help in these matters. I think you will find out it is a damaged coin and was done outside the mint. I have seen U.S. dimes like that as well as quarters.

Need help identifying a Canadian coin.?
1992 Canadian Dime (Obverse)

I live in the southern US, and I ran across this coin at my job the other day. At first I thought it was just a Canadian dime, but I looked at it closer, and discovered it has not monetary value on it. It's the size of a dime and has something to do with the 25th anniversary of the 1972 Summit Series hockey games.

Here it is compared to a Canadian dime and quarter.

And the obverse sides. The spot in the middle of it looks like some type of damage.

Any help identifting this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
I figured out what it is. A friend suggested the spot on the back might have been where a pin was located. Sure enough, that's what it is. http://cgi.ebay.com/1997-RCM-Can-Russia- Hockey-series-Silver-Pin-RARE_W0QQitemZ1 80032175749QQihZ008QQcategoryZ3379QQrdZ1 QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem

Can someone suggest a robust and accurate industrial grade Canadian coin counting machine?
1992 Canadian Dime (Reverse)

A friend of mine has a business that generates about 15000 pennies, nickles, dimes and quarters every month. He needs to purchase a good industrial grade machine (money no problem) that can count AND sort the coins. Also, the machine needs to be able to reject any and all non Canadian currency.

15k coins is not that many. Used to do that on a small arcade route in a month. I used a Klopp counter, this one did not have a sorter, but they do sell one with a sorter. Not sure about the Canadian side, but they have been at it awhile, and would be a good place to start.

I have a Canadian 5 cent coin from 1890 & and half dime from 1866?
Rouge le Fou (231.365 9.22.08)

On the back it has a crown then below it says 5 cents 1890 which is surrounded by some sort of vine plant. On the front it has a picture of a woman my guess is that it is queen victoria as it says on it "Victoria Dei Gratia Regina" then it says Canada below it. It is in very good shape.

The half dime that i have is not in as great of shape as it is slightly bent. The back has the words "Half dime" and these words are surrounded by plants of some sort. The front has a seated woman with what looks like a staff in her hand. It says "United States of America" and has the date 1866 on it.

I got these from my deceased Grandma along with a bunch of other coins, but these two are the oldest N. American coins aside from some silver dollars from the 1880's. I was just wondering how rare either of these two coins are? I would never sell them as they belonged to my Grandma, but i am interested in if they are rare or not. Thanks.
Oops not sure why this was put in genealogy. Must not be a coin section?

Here is a site that has the history and a photo of your half-dime: http://www.oldcoinshop.com/coinhistory/0 ... (Interestingly, the half-dime was the first denomination struck when the U.S. Mint was established in 1792! Pretty cool!)

Here is a site regarding old Canadian coins, too: http://www.allensinc.com/coins/canadian/ ... It looks like it will give you values, but value isn't always related to rarity. Ah, found a site with photos: http://coins.granetwork.com/can5pre1930. ... Not sure if it will tell you how rare they are, though.

You might try emailing someone at a coin shop or coin collecting club. I have several silver dollars that were my moms, dating back to the 1870s, but I'd never get rid of them either (well, never say "never," if we were starving maybe....lol)

pre 1967 80% silver canadian coins what is the content of the other 20%?
A Matter Of Dime

trying to find out the properties of pre 1967 canadian coins, dimes quarters and half dollars.

According to the Royal Canadian Mint website the 1967 -- 10 Cent, 25 Cent, 50 Cent, and 1 Dollar coins are all made of 80% silver and 20% copper though there are also 1967 25 Cent coins made of 50% silver and 50% copper which have a slightly lower mass. Also, prior to 1920 the 10 Cent, 25 Cent, and 50 Cent coins were made of sterling silver (92.5% silver and 7.5% copper). I hope that helps.

This is a post I wrote about 3 years ago and recently found again and I thought it was still relevant today. I still pick up pennies on the ground and check vending machines and even recently found 85¢ in a coin counting machine , and every time I find coins I make sure to check them over for any more valuable then face value. I still think it is worth keeping an eagle eye out for a decent coin. Last summer I came across a penny from 1909 among some other old ones around the same year, I picked up each and everyone of them (27 total). I checked out the price online for them all and found that the 1909 penny would go for about $35. I thought I would get a decent deal as I figured...

Button-and-loop style jewelry clasp, made with a Mercury dime. By Virginia Vivier

In designing jewelry using "found" objects, an interesting way of creating a clasp is with a rare Mercury dime, button-and-loop combination.

Mercury dimes were minted between 1916 and 1946, so they are hard to find.

You can usually find them at coin collector shops. Ask for imperfect, dinged-up rejects.
