Loonies and Toonies?, or dollar and two dollar coin. Canadians only please.?

Every once in a while, someone will question my request for change from a five or ten dollar bill in Loonies and/or Toonies. I really cannot figure out if they are being serious or facetious . I always refer to the dollar or two dollar coin as toonie/ toonies and loonie/ loonies, and really have a hard time believing that some Canadians might not know what I'm talking about, or that they actually might be calling it a dollar and two dollar coin. WHAT DO YOU CALL THEM.

OBVIOULY, PLEASE THIS QUESTION IS FOR CANADIANS.

Yes, a one dollar coin is refered to as a loonie because it has a loon on it, and a two dollar coin (only created about a decade ago) is a toonie, for obvious reasons

AHHA! hey fellow canadians, I asked people if they liked the idea of a five dollar "foonie" coin, and they..?

Believe me!! Isn't that hillarious! Aw man, some people are so gullible...

As a Canadian I think that is a retarded idea. We have enough change as it is. Sure the loonie and toonie are really pretty but so are the bills.

Why do Canadians refer to their one-dollar coin as the loonie?

There is an image of the waterbird (the loon) minted on the coin.

Canadians do not like how their one-dollar coin looks.

A child gave the coin this nickname several years ago.

  • A $5 dollar coin that boldly goes with Shatner

One of the things American tourists have to get used to when traveling abroad is the preponderance of different currencies, and the preponderance of different currency types. By this I mean not only converting, say, dollars to euros, but getting it out of your head that all coins are “less than a dollar” while all paper money is inherently worth more. Because beyond these shores, it’s simply not the case.

And you don’t even have to look beyond the borders of this very continent. Canada uses coins in higher denominations, from $2 to the $5 coin to the $10 coin and beyond. But for a very good reason, it’s the Canadian $5 coin that attracts the most interest. Not only from Canadians, and not only because a 5 dollar coin is useful and convenient, but because of whose image graces the $5 coin.

Can I do this? : Can i go to the bank and trade paper money for ...

I don’t think banks will do this. You need a reputable high volume gold and silver coin dealer. There are several online. Try Kitco for one. Prices on those silver coins vary widely so you want to be careful about using a local business. There are three or four dealers within two miles of my office and their prices vary by as much as $5/coin. One problem with silver coins is that you are paying for the fabrication cost of the coin. As I write this, the markets are closed but silver is quoted at $16.05/ounce and the coins are quoted at $18.55. Thus you are paying $2.50 per coin for fabrication. That equates to about a 12% premium for the coins. You will have shipping and handling on top of that.
