We have them- but they are not in circulation. You can only get them in coin sets from the mint, or separately. They are legal tender.

Coin Collection - Canadian Half Dollars and Dollars

How much for the value of coins?

I've been given a sum of rare coins approx. $25. These coins range from 1967 canadian dimes, quarters, half dollars and dollar coins. I also have a few old american dollar coins. I was just wondering if it is worth cashing them in for cash or should I just keep them. I heard there is a value in silver but I just don't know if I have enough silver coins to actually make a decent profit.

The first link gives you the current value of the silver (in US dollars) of US and Canadian coins. The second link gives the collectible value of Canadian coins. The US dollar coins made since 1971 (Eisenhower, Susan B. Anthony, and Sacagawea) are not all that valuable right now, but the ones made before 1936 (Morgan & Peace) can be very valuable. The third link is a search engine for coin dealers. I hope that helps.

pre 1967 80% silver canadian coins what is the content of the other 20%?

trying to find out the properties of pre 1967 canadian coins, dimes quarters and half dollars.

According to the Royal Canadian Mint website the 1967 -- 10 Cent, 25 Cent, 50 Cent, and 1 Dollar coins are all made of 80% silver and 20% copper though there are also 1967 25 Cent coins made of 50% silver and 50% copper which have a slightly lower mass. Also, prior to 1920 the 10 Cent, 25 Cent, and 50 Cent coins were made of sterling silver (92.5% silver and 7.5% copper). I hope that helps.

Take them to a coin shop and they will appraise them for you.

Can you help me with the value of these old coins?

I have recently acquired some old coins such as Canadian half pennies, pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, half dollars and American coins such as nickels, dimes, half dimes, pennies, quarters(quarter dollar)
Some of these coins date to the mid 1800s.
I have no idea if these coins have any monetary value but would appreciate any input. I am NOT a computer wizard and am having difficulty looking this up on the Internet.

Without seeing pictures it's very difficult for anyone to give you a good answer. Many factors play in to how much your coins are worth (i.e. condition, scarcity, mint marks, current market demand, etc.)

1 - Take your coin to a local coin dealer (trustworthy ones can be found - shop around). It never hurts to get a second opinion. They will be able to tell you so much more by evaluation the condition of the coins. They will also know the amount minted and what it is going for in today's market.

2 - Try posting pictures on this website (there are many experts here that can help you evaluate it - there also may be people willing to buy if you are trying to sell):
http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/defau lt.asp

3 - Repost this question and include pictures. You can use websites like http://www.photobucket.com and include the link in your question.

Good luck!

P.S. You should not clean your coins. Most coin collectors see cleaning a coin as the equivalent of stripping down antique furniture and refinishing it.

When cleaning, the surface metal of the coin is often stripped. Anything used to scrub the coin will leave scratches (even 100% pure silk will leave hairline scratches). Most cleaning products will have some type of reaction with the coin's metal and the surface metal can also be removed in this manner.

Your best bet is to leave the coins alone. Cleaning the coin will leave traces - which can be found by the knowledgeable collector - who in turn will not buy the cleaned coin. Also if you ever wanted to send your coin into a grading company, they can recognize signs of cleaning and will send your coin back in a "cleaned" slab (also called a "body bag" in the coin world) - which is usually a greatly decreased value.

If you absolutely must must must clean your coins do not use the method described above as it will react with the metal in your coin. Use 100% acetone (do not use fingernail polish remover!). It must be 100% pure because other additives will react with the coin metal. Place your coin(s) in the solution for several minutes (do not leave in for long periods of time). Rinse your coin(s) in distilled water. Next remove your coins and either pat dry with a soft cloth or allow the coin to air dry (air drying is better as you don't risk scratching the coin with the cloth). NEVER scrub your coins!

I would still advise you to leave your coins as they are. They may not be bright and shiny but that is what most collectors prefer.

    .

“This marks a number of months in a row where core interest rates were running faster than the bank expected,” said Douglas Porter, deputy chief economist with BMO Capital Markets.

“Underlying inflation has been a bit higher than the bank expected and combined with a lot of the strong data we have seen recently in Canada just ramps up the odds of the Bank of Canada starting to hike interest rates in the second half of the year (as expected),” he said.

Strong economic data has resulted in the dollar approaching 99 cents throughout the week and we could hit parity if retail sales figures also surpass expectations, Porter said.

“If they come in higher than expected, we could see the dollar taking a serious run at par,” he said.

The next year the silver content was reduced to 40% when a clad composition was put into use. The composition was again changed in 1971 when silver was eliminated from the coin and the copper-nickel clad common to the dollar dime and quarter was used. Later in 1976 special commemorative coins were issued in both copper-nickel and in 40% silver. And starting in 1992 the mint began making proof half dollars out of both copper-nickel and 90% silver.
