what is the value of a 1898-1960 Canadian 1 dollar silver coin?

Well something is wrong here because the first Canadian silver dollar struck for circulation was in 1935 and there is no commemorative dollar from 1960. You must have what is called a trade dollar that was made for a celebration by a city or group. They are very common in Canada. The usually have a date on them that they are good up to. They are a private mint item not a Royal Canadian Mint item. There are thousands of them from British Columbia to Newfoundland. I have a lot from Prince Edward Island as well as Nova Scotia. They usually sell for $4-$20 depending on how rare it is. I do not have a catalog of values for these items but one is out there. Best I can do here,

I have a $100.00 dollar gold coin ...Silver Jubilee Queen Elizabeth 2nd ..What is its value in Canadian Dollar

If it's a Canadian $100 gold coin, the face value of it is $100 CDN if you choose to spend it.

What you're looking for is it's numismatic value, and that can vary based on the age, condition and rarity of the coin.

What year was the coin minted? Has the coin ever been used? Was there any mistakes when the coin was minted -- that is, was it double-struck (struck twice)? Does Her Majesty face the wrong way compared to the regular issue? etcetera.

Your best answers are not on the Web. A good coin dealer in your town can assay (figure out the value) of your coin and (probably) quote you a fair price.

But if the Web way's the only way for you, seek on Yahoo the following search terms

<year> 100 Canada gold coin Queen Elizabeth Silver Jubilee

and ye shall find.

Good luck, Cincypix.

How much for the value of coins?

I've been given a sum of rare coins approx. $25. These coins range from 1967 canadian dimes, quarters, half dollars and dollar coins. I also have a few old american dollar coins. I was just wondering if it is worth cashing them in for cash or should I just keep them. I heard there is a value in silver but I just don't know if I have enough silver coins to actually make a decent profit.

The first link gives you the current value of the silver (in US dollars) of US and Canadian coins. The second link gives the collectible value of Canadian coins. The US dollar coins made since 1971 (Eisenhower, Susan B. Anthony, and Sacagawea) are not all that valuable right now, but the ones made before 1936 (Morgan & Peace) can be very valuable. The third link is a search engine for coin dealers. I hope that helps.

Canadian Dollar Face Value?

I have a good chunk of Canadian dollars (around 15). All ranging from the late 60's to the early to mid 80's. 4 questions here. Answer whichever ones you can! Thanks!
What would you say the average value of those are?
How can you tell if they are silver proofs, not nickel proofs?
Where can I go trade these in?
Will these coins go up in face value by the year, or is it around the same price?

Old coins are really not that valuable, even if they are silver. Go to a reputable coin dealer if you want to value them. You'll probably spend more in gas money than you will get above the face value of the coins.

Keep and enjoy them rather than thinking of them as an investment.

bullion silver coins?

assuming $1 USD = $1 CDN then When you buy a 1 oz Bullion silver coin with a $5 value in Canadian dollars how much is it actually worth at 17$/oz

Is it worth $17 only as the value of silver?
Is it worth $22 because of the $5 surplus on it

Is it worth what people are willing to pay for it and therefore buying them at $23-25 is worth it because as the price of silver goes up, there should be a surplus of value.

Thank you
Derek

This coin simultaneously has two, entirely separate values:

* The value of 1 Troy ounce of .999 fine silver, plus or minus whatever premium or discount might apply when selling it to a particular buyer.

* $5 in Canadian currency, its legal tender value in Canada.

That also happens to be its floor value; it'll always be worth that, even if (hypothetically) the price of silver were to plummet to levels last seen a decade ago.

Those two values are *either/or*, not added together. So the coin is worth about US $17 (the approximate value of a Troy ounce of silver today) - plus any premiums or minus any discounts from spot silver you might encounter when selling it - *or* 5 Canadian Dollars as legal tender when spent in Canada (also coincidentally worth about $5 US at current exchange rates).

As another example, Canada issued a set of Olympic commemorative coins in 1973-76, for the Montreal Olympics of 1976. Those .925 Sterling Silver coins are legal tender at their face values of $5 and $10 Canadian, respectively, and contain about .72 and 1.44 Troy ounces of silver respectively. Those coins have the closest correspondence between face value and silver value - among high purity American and Canadian silver coins - that I know of. They also used to be available at huge discounts to spot on eBay, but no longer :-).

Finally, as alcan52 astutely points out, you shouldn't have to pay $23-$25 (if that price doesn't include tax and/or shipping and insurance) for the Canadian $5 silver Maple Leaf bullion coins; they are widely available for prices closer to the silver spot price. In addition to Monex, I checked another dealer, Kitco, and their price was $19.14 on a day when the silver spot price was $16.89.
